My first day in Alaska I saw a pregnant moose at only a couple yards and a bald eagle swoop down and grab seagull off the sea. I have taken that as a good omen for the summer. Follow my adventures and research as an intern at NOAA’s Kasitsna Bay Laboratory.

Project Plan
Oh dear. I've just had my first taste of Alaska "what-have-I-done"s. This is what I call that feeling when you take a big risk, like moving really really far away from home for one nationally competitive scholarship or another, and then start to doubt your choice for the first time. It's a little more than nerves, but much less than regret. It's just like a scary change of plans... or more like realizing plans were never going to do what you wanted them to do to begin with. It isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it is certainly scary when it first sinks in. In this instance I just drafted (at least attempted) my project plan for a fairly intense semester of research and analysis. In applying for this internship in Alaska, I was so excited about ALASKA, I maybe didn't look into the project I was signing up for as closely as I should have. When it comes to science I'm a bug, wetland, biology, and ecology kind of girl. I am now realizing that I signed up for an Ocean Circulation internship, meaning mapping ocean currents, physical oceanography. I was born and raised in Minnesota. What on earth do I know about oceans!?! I was already behind in the sciences related to my areas of interest, but now I'm starting from scratch in something I've only touched on in school. It's scary, but exciting at the same time. I am going to learn SO MUCH I never thought I would learn this summer. Life! And who knows, maybe I'll love it. And even if I don't, I'll have gained the experience and knowledge, and slightly narrowed down the things I might want to do with my life. It's just little unnerving right now in the planning stages, but I've got great support here. We'll work it out :)
