SEWARD

The drive up.  Freakishly beautiful.

genius tank design to simulate ocean currents and eliminate bumping against the edges of the tank, which can be very harmful to baby creatures, like octopus paralarvae

our strenuous day hike

Harding Ice Field

Exit Glacier

Wow.

You can identify specific humpbacks by the unique markings on their tails.  Researchers like to keep track of which whales return to which areas each year.

Bear Glacier.  Actually two glaciers.  You can tell by the moraine (stripe of unconsolidated glacial debris) in the middle.

The Sea Otters are my favorite :)

  2. Ok, was at exit glacier around 1990 it was right off the road. Fresh salmon kill, eagles, and fresh bear prints. Cool black worms in the ice and hearing the glacier move was cool. Getting back into the car before the bear attack priceless.

    1. They have signs all along the road of where exit glacier used to be. The retreat is amazing. I didn't see the bear, but my fellow interns saw one on the side of the road, and other hikers saw one on the trail.
